Fast Facts

  • Those granted Certification status under the current standards will not require re-certification. Their Certification status does not expire and they are considered certified for life. In addition, their certification is portable between workplaces or sectors.
  • Those granted Certification status under the new standards will require refresher training every 3 years to maintain their status. As above, their certification is portable between workplaces or sectors.

Under the new standards:

  • Part One, Part Two & Refresher must be taken from a MOL approved trainer.
  • Both parts are required to be completed within 6 months of the other.
  • Part One is a minimum of 3 days & Part Two is a minimum of 2 days.

What this means for your business

  • Self-paced training via print based workbooks and e-courses will be available for purchase only until January 29, 2016 due to requirements set out in the new standards by the Ministry.
  • Workplaces cannot conduct their own in-house Certification Training unless it's through an approved trainer. Employers can apply through the MOL to become an approved training provider of an approved JHSC Certification Training program.
  • To be certified under the current standards (and be exempt from refresher training), you must complete BOTH Parts One & Two by February 29, 2016 with paperwork submitted to the Ministry of Labour postmarked no later than April 30, 2016.

After March 1, 2016, WSPS will offer Certification Training under the new standards in classrooms throughout Ontario and can accommodate busy schedules with flexible onsite sessions - any shift, 24-7 - an ideal option for group training.

Why these changes are being made

The Ministry of Labour is revising the standards to strengthen the common, consistent, foundational training requirements and to ensure high quality and consistent delivery of approved JHSC certification training programs.
