GUIDELINES FOR WORKSHEET 4: WALK THROUGH
Evidence of Contamination: Look for:
Evidence of dust on surfaces, in the air, on worker's clothing, face, hands
Potential exposure to vapours or fumes
Evidence of leaks or spills
Record any of the above, noting location.
Hygiene Facilities and Work Practices: Look at:
Eating facilities – Designated eating area? Away from hazardous substances?
Hand/face washing facilities and practices – soap and towels available?
Adherence to safe handling/use practices
Workers'/supervisors' knowledge of safe handling procedures and required precautions
Workers' direct physical contact with the substance, if any
Proper training and use of control equipment
SDSs available for all chemicals and everyone knows how to access them
Prevenatative maintenance schedules followed
Ventilation Systems: Check:
Conditions/cleanliness of air outlets and inlets
Proper location
Location of local exhaust hoods
Proper maintenance
Rated capacity suited to the task
Actual capacity of operating system
You may need the assistance of a person trained to evaluate ventilation systems.
