FOREWORD
In an effort to further the safety of the worker in Ontario, the Turkey Safe Work Practices Manual was
developed. The document provides an industry specifi c methodology which if followed, signifi cantly
increases the likelihood of industry stakeholders meeting their respective occupational health and
safety obligations at Ontario turkey farms. It cannot be stressed enough that this is a living document,
a work in progress. Though further research and development of new techniques may appear in the
industry, with the use of this document we endeavour to set a guideline for safety in the workplace by
which new techniques can be judged for safety.
To address the lack of documented safety guidelines for the poultry industry, an industry
representative group convened to create the Turkey Safe Work Practices Manual. The practices outline
the minimum requirements for poultry workers to work safely in Ontario. The Safe Work Practices
Committee included representatives from the following groups who were instrumental in creating the
Turkey Safe Work Practices Manual:
Poultry Service Association
Turkey Farmers of Ontario
Workplace Safety and Prevention Services
Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food
The purpose of the Turkey Safe Work Practices Manual is to:
■ increase safety in the workplace;
■ provide and describe safe work practices to follow when performing
work on turkey farms; and
■ provide an industry specifi c framework for curriculum and training
program development.
