WAREHOUSING
(Ergonomics)
INITIATIVE
Will all businesses be inspected?
Not all businesses will be inspected.
How will the Ministry select which businesses to inspect?
This initiative is task-based meaning that any workplace where work activities involving
warehousing with material selection and distribution may be visited. Injury data from the WSIB
Transportation and Warehousing industry shows that in 2020, 31% of all injuries were MSDs.
Will the business be notified of an MLTSD ergonomist visit?
No, the MLTSD ergonomist visit will be unannounced. The visit by the MLTSD ergonomist is an
inspection under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Are you expecting ergonomic risk assessments for all operations/jobs?
The purpose of this initiative is to:
raise awareness of ergonomics and MSD hazards
promote MSD prevention in the workplace
increase awareness of the hazards related to manual material handling on ladders
raise awareness of visibility hazards in warehouses
facilitate the internal responsibility system
It is not the intention of the initiative to require businesses to incur extensive expenditures to
do ergonomics assessments of every job, task, or activity. Identifying jobs, tasks or activities that
present an elevated exposure to MSD hazards and doing ergonomics risk assessments on those
jobs, tasks or activities may be part of an effective MSD prevention program. WSPS is available to
assist workplaces with this activity to prioritize areas in need.
