For many businesses, storage of materials and product is a challenge.
One critical aspect that demands attention is racking safety. Warehouse or storage room racking
systems, while indispensable for optimizing storage space, pose safety risks that, if overlooked, can
lead to accidents, injuries, and even fatalities. This safety resource is a quick guide to racking safety
and best practices, that can be used to foster a secure work environment and give employees the
knowledge and tools necessary to navigate and mitigate potential hazards associated with racking
systems.
1. Ensure racking is in good condition
and appropriate for the items to be
stored on the racks.
2. Always be aware of the load
capacity of the racks you use.
3. Ensure racking is installed as per the
manufacturers instructions.
4. Provide training to the supervisor
who oversees your warehouse/
storage area so they can identify
hazardous conditions in your
racking system.
5. Provide training to Joint Health and
Safety Committee members/Health
and Safety representatives, so
they are able to identify hazardous
conditions when conducting
workplace inspections.
