WSPS.CA 130-BPS-13-IGOT © 2024, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS) 1 877 494 WSPS (9777) | 905 614 1400 2 WORKER The 7 Steps to Lockout/Tagout STEP ACTIVITY 1 Prepare for shutdown Identify all forms of energy and how to control them Ensure that all lockout equipment is available Communicate that equipment will be shut down 2 Shut down According to normal operations 3 Isolate Equipment Turn off equipment through main disconnects, levers, or valves 4 Control Stored Energy Release/bleed stored energy (i.e dump valves) Block potential energy Allow time for system to cool or any motion to stop 5 Apply LOTO device Apply locks to each energy source (ensure the key to the lock remains with the person who applied the lock) 6 Verify Isolation Try to start the machine, no lights should turn on nor should any movement occur 7 Release from LOTO when: All of the work has been completed Tools have been removed All guards have been put back in place Everyone has removed their locks, no one is inside the cell (the area within and around the machine is clear) © 2024 Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS) Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS) grants permission to approved end users to reproduce this document in whole or in part, provided its intended use is for non-commercial, educational purposes and that full acknowledgement is given to WSPS.
