First Job, Safe Job provides resources to help you prepare
your teen for a safe and positive work experience.
Workplace safety isn't the most casual conversation you'll have with your kid, but it's one of the most important.
Here are 6 ways you can increase the likelihood that they'll hear you out:
Tips to get your
listening about
workplace safety
teen
Timing
is everything
If they don't seem in the mood
to talk, they definitely aren't in
the mood to listen. Read their
body language and choose
moments free of distraction.
Lead
with empathy
You were young once too.
Remember how nervous you were
starting a new job? How eager you
were to impress? Approach your
conversations with this in mind.
Share your
experiences
Maybe you did something
unsafe in your past, or you know
someone who did. Sharing your
experiences will bring the topic
of health and safety to life.
Show you're
listening
Let them know you are listening.
Hear them out, then repeat
it back by paraphrasing
their comments, questions
and concerns.
Collaborate
on solutions
They're growing up and have
opinions too! Make sure you
problem-solve together, so
they feel empowered about
the outcome.
Create a
safe space
Even if the situation alarms you,
remember to stay calm,
withhold judgement, choose
your words carefully and
watch your tone of voice.
