What can we do to prevent these hazards? Knowing where underground and overhead u�li�es are on your jobsite could save your life. Prevention Points Every site may be serviced by one or more utilities. Whether electrical, gas, telephone, water service, cable, fibre optics, etc., it is critical to verify the existence and location of each utility before working at any jobsite using an approved locate service provided. Review the General Health & Safety Best Practices section on page 7 before performing any task. A written utility clearance must be obtained prior to digging. Ensure appropriate supervision is always available to clarify the details of the job or concerns which may arise. Verify the plan for the utility locations are correct (address, etc.). Observe site for private utilities such as gas BBQ, infrared mosquito's devices, and consult with a private utility locator as required. If digging a trench or a deep dig, you may need a utility company representative present while you dig – they will confirm this. Pay attention to know if hand digging, machine digging, vacuum or hydro digging is directed or permitted on the application. Be mindful while hand digging as aggressive stabbing into the ground can sever utility connections. Do not plant, excavate or stake trees without utility location. Painted lines from utility companies are only accurate within 1 metre or 3 feet of the line. Allow for error and carefully hand dig within this zone. ! ?
