Overhead power lines and contact with buried cables while digging are two major sources of injuries and fatali�es. Prevention Points Workers need to be aware of their surroundings including overhead wires; downed power lines; and underground wires (Refer to Utilities). Here are other considerations when working around electrical hazards: Review the General Health & Safety Best Practices section on page 7 before performing any task. Call utilities to locate underground wires before digging. Always be aware of overhead power lines to avoid contact. Comply with the 10-foot power line clearance rule. Use a portable GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) for added protection. Always follow electrical lockout procedures when servicing or repairing electrical equipment or tools. ! ? ACTION! Walk your crew through your lockout procedures using specific electrical equipment.
