To eliminate the ignion of a fire, precauons must be taken to reduce the combinaon of heat sources, flammable/ combusble materials and oxygen. Knowledge of how to use a fire exnguisher safely in the event of a fire is crical. Prevention Points Fire is made of three components: oxygen, heat and fuel. The elimination of any one of the three components will extinguish a fire either by smothering, absorbing the heat or shutting off and/or eliminating the fuel source. Most fires can be put out with a fire extinguisher marked A, B, C. Fire Types Class Materials A Ordinary combustibles (wood, paper, textile) B Flammable liquids (gasoline, oil) C Electrical currency (motor appliances) D Combustible metals (magnesium, potassium) Fire Safety Tips Review the General Health & Safety Best Practices section on page 7 before performing any task. GENERAL Store flammable and combustible materials away from all heat sources. Never fuel equipment inside a building. Store fuels outside the building in clearly marked containers. Check with your local fire department before burning any waste or debris at your facility or job site. All chemicals (gasoline, etc.) should be clearly identified and in a specified location. All workers should be trained in the proper operation of a fire extinguisher. Fire extinguishers should be available in all workplaces, including trucks. VEHICLE ON THE ROADWAY If in motion, attempt to safely park the vehicle well off the roadway. If possible, attempt to extinguish fire with available fire extinguisher. If possible, position pylons or flares to warn the public of the danger. ! ?
