Fuels are very dangerous because they are highly flammable or explosiveness and can be extremely toxic if swallowed, which can lead to serious injuries, illnesses or death. Prevention Points Fuels are a common cause of fire in our industry. Consider these prevention tips before handling fuels: Review the General Health & Safety Best Practices section on page 7 before performing any task. Store fuels in certified labeled containers appropriate to the fuel type. Flame arresters should be present. Do not smoke, operate electrical tools or other sources of spark when you are handling fuels. Turn off cell phones when working around fuels. Do not fuel any vehicle or machine while they are running. Always let the engine cool before refuelling. Wash hands thoroughly after use. Always ensure there is an ABC class extinguisher nearby when working with any fuel. Secure and seal fuels safely when being transported. Store fuels outside. Do not fill portable gas containers in the back of pickup truck lined with bed liner. This poses the risk of a static electricity explosion. Bulk fuel storage tanks require concrete sill containment under the tank. (Consult fuel supplier for spill containment requirements.) Gas When fuelling machines, keep away from plant material or any porous surfaces. Avoid filling a gasoline tank on a vehicle or equipment completely to the top, heat causes gasoline to expand and fire can result if it spills over the hot engine. ! ?
