Many of these were due to three types of machine-related incidents: machine rollovers, machine run overs and machine entanglements (CAIR, 2011). In Ontario, industrial vehicles, including tractors, account for an average of 7,525 lost-me injury claims every year (WSIB, 2024). Tractor rollovers – both sideways and backwards – are likely to result in death if the operator is not protected by and properly using a roll-over protecve structure (ROPS), which includes a seatbelt. Proper guarding of a Power Take-Off (PTO) sha is essenal to reduce the risk of entanglement – it can take less than one second for a person to be entangled in the equipment. Prevention Points Operators must be alert at all times and maintain complete control of their tractor and equipment. Here are some tractor and equipment safety tips: Review the General Health & Safety Best Practices section on page 7 before performing any task. Avoid travelling across a slope. Travel up/down slopes with the load (the heavy end of the tractor) uphill for greater stability. When unloaded, the rear end of the tractor should be uphill. The load bucket should be positioned as low as possible at all times and rest on ground when parked. Always look and check behind the vehicle before backing up. ! !
