LANDSCAPE ONTARIO – WORKPLACE SAFETY TAILGATE TALKS 14 © 2026, WSPS.CA Identify and mark all ground objects to be avoided, such as sprinkler heads, stakes, water valves, clothes line anchors, etc. Avoid operating equipment on slopes exceeding 25% grade and never cross hard objects or surfaces (sidewalks, driveways, stepping stones, etc.,) with the tines down. Make certain all people, pets, possessions, and property remain outside of the safe working area. Before fuelling, refer to the safety data sheet for the recommended handling and spill containment instructions. Always use National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) approved non-spill containers with spouts to avoid spillage and equipped with the appropriate flame arrester. Make sure to fuel equipment when engine is shut off and cooled. (See Fuelling). Do not remove guards when operating. ACTION! Discuss the safest way to unload and load an aerator onto a pick–up truck particularly when working alone.
