Emergency preparedness training (including environmental hazards) should be taken to ensure your workers understand what safe protocols should be taken to stay protected in any situaon. Prevention Points As the result of working outdoors, outdoor workers need to be aware of the potential hazards they are exposed to in their working environments such as exposure to sun, rain, cold and hot weather, severe weather conditions and even the rough terrain. These working conditions can cause unexpected hazards and workers need to be trained accordingly. Review the General Health & Safety Best Practices section on page 7 before performing any task. Sun Exposure Take breaks indoors, if possible. Rest in a shaded area for a few minutes every hour. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Protect exposed skin such as the face, neck, hands, forearms, ears, etc., from the sun using sun protection, e.g. hats, clothing, etc. Wear safety sunglasses which filter out at least 90 percent of the sun's ultraviolet rays. Be aware and recognize any skin problem due to over exposure to the sun. Severe Weather (Snow, Ice, Tornadoes) Be aware of changing forecasted weather conditions daily before starting and during work. In the event of severe weather, work conditions should be evaluated, suspended if need be and resumed when weather conditions have stabilized. Refer to the Lightning safety topic for more information on working in storm conditions. ! ?
