Rotang the task of plate compacng will minimize the exposure of vibraonal forces and reduce injuries. Prevention Points When operating on a relatively level grade, a plate compactor will move under its own power with the operator directing its travel path. When compacting on a grade which is not level, the operator may have to take steps to control the machine and to ensure their safety. Consider these prevention points: Review the General Health & Safety Best Practices section on page 7 before performing any task. Do not operate plate compactors inside a building or other enclosed environment which is not properly vented due to carbon monoxide build up. Avoid operating a plate compactor on hard or non-yielding surface. During uphill compaction, it may be necessary for the operator to swing the compactors handle around and pull the machine slightly. Plate compactors tend to slide sideways when operating on a sloping terrain. To prevent the plate from sliding, steer the plate toward the rise of the slope to angle the machine. Whenever assembling, lubricating or adjusting any part of a plate compactor, stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug. If necessary to use equipment for lengthy periods, take frequent breaks or rotate task with another worker. ! ?
