Questions to get You Started
How often do you conduct safety checks on your lifting devices and equipment?
Do you have a training program in place for operators?
What lifting devices and mobile equipment are you currently using in your operations?
How do you ensure the safety of your employees when operating cranes and other heavy
machinery?
For any health and safety program, it is vital to complete a risk assessment to help you determine
what type of equipment you have and to ensure it is appropriate for the work environment. The
following are focus areas to address hazards from lifting devices, mobile equipment or cranes.
Lifting Devices are Maintained, Annually Inspected, and Clearly Marked
Maintaining lifting devices such as cranes, hoists, and forklifts regularly is essential for their safe
and efficient operation. An annual inspection by a qualified individual is necessary to confirm that
these devices can safely handle their maximum rated load. To avoid overloading and the potential
hazards it can cause, the maximum load capacity should be prominently displayed on the device.
It is also important to remember that new or modified lifting devices such as overhead cranes
and lift assist devices must have a Pre-Start Health and Safety Review (PHSR) completed by an
Ontario licensed Professional Engineer following Industrial Establishments – O. Reg. 851, section 7.
Implement corrective measures cited for compliance before operating or using the equipment.
Procedures for Vehicle Pre-Start Checks and Reporting
Before operating a vehicle, performing a pre-start check to verify its operational readiness is
essential. This involves inspecting crucial elements like the brakes, tires, lights, and fluid levels.
If any issues are detected during this check, they should be promptly reported for immediate
correction.
