Designing (or redesigning) and developing a workspace that meets current and future business
needs is a challenge. Business needs, technology, and workforce change make it nearly impossible
to account for all variables. Address current and future safety challenges by considering the
following design elements:
Incorporate Ergonomics
Not designing workspaces to support employees' physical and cognitive comfort and efficiency
can lead to strain, fatigue, and long-term health problems like musculoskeletal disorders. Ignoring
ergonomics can also impact other safety hazards, leading to more accidents.
Lighting
Insufficient lighting can strain eyes, cause fatigue, and increase the risk of accidents. It's essential
to ensure all areas of the workplace have adequate lighting. Ensuring the lighting is appropriate
for the task and fits well within the workspace. For example, a warehouse may have sufficient
lighting to start, but adding racking can change the distribution of that light, which can lead to
dark spots.
Ensure Enough Space
Having cramped workspaces can hinder movement and lead to inefficiencies. They can also
increase the risk of accidents from bumping into or being struck by objects. Having safe and
appropriate egress is vital to ensure that employees can safely exit in an emergency and that all
corridors and pathways are clear from obstructions.
