A guard is necessary if a machine meets the MAC criteria: MECHANICAL SAFEGUARDING How do you know if a guard is adequate? If someone can reach AROUND, UNDER, THROUGH or OVER (AUTO) your safeguarding to access the moving part, it is not adequately guarded. AROUND UNDER THROUGH OVER Tips to Remember: • Everyone is responsible for workplace safety • Never remove or make ineffective any safeguarding devices placed on machinery • Recognize hazards with MAC • Check the effectiveness of guarding with AUTO Contact your supervisor immediately, if you notice any missing, damaged or inadequate guarding. Is it MOVING? Is it ACCESSABLE? Are there CONSEQUENCES if a moving part makes contact with a worker?
